SARA LINDSAY Serendip: Tapestry and Works on Paper 1997-2006 Serendip will be at Carnegie Gallery, Hobart to 7 September, 2008.. Ten years of Sara Lindsay’s work is surveyed, reflecting her interest in both the formal consideration and personal associations conjured by the medium of textiles. For Lindsay, fabric is linked to her own journeys of self-discovery, both in its historic and material presence. Several of the works in Serendip are informed by a visit to the tea plantations of Sri Lanka as she traced her family history in the footsteps of her English grandfather. Sara Lindsay was among the first weavers at the Victorian Tapestry Workshop. As an artist, she has pursued tapestry weaving as the foundation of her practice, which also includes works on paper and mixed media wall-pieces that often incorporate tapestry. Her oeuvre is unique in its seamless combination of the technical, formal and conceptual aspects of tapestry. Her focus on reduction and subtle geometry reinvigorates tapestry and places it firmly in the realm of contemporary art. Australia’s annual FASHION FANTASIA (art on legs) will again be held at the Derwent Entertainment Centre, Hobart, this year on 11th October.
