This will justifiably prove a popular new book that includes quite a selection of construction processes including “coiling with wrapped cords, building with flat pieces, manipulating fibre with tucks and gathers and creating forms with heat-reactive or dissolvable fabric” (from the book jacket). The step-by-step instructions are clear and uncomplicated, and the photographs which accompany them are beautiful. The images are of works by well-known fibre artists and show close-ups of the detail on garments, meaning the book is a visual as well as intellectual feast. Tellier-Loumagne taught textile and knit design in France for more than 40 years and clearly wants to pay tribute to glorious surfaces, where a detail can give as much visual information as images of vast spaces, skies and landscapes. Wet felting, needle felting and tufting are explained in sufficient detail to make this an instruction book as well, with specific projects included (industrial processes are given some consideration too, which is valuable). It is rare to find how-to given a symphonic quality that motivates and inspires to this degree. Those who teach should find it indispensable in motivating a workshop. $80 posted

Shirley’s skills are remarkable and varied and she has done herself justice in this beautifully produced book with an introduction by Annemieke Mein, O.A.M. The main theme of this book is painting in embroidery and she is, by her own admission, obsessed with rocks although many other aspects of nature are rendered for what Helen Musa calls “Geology in Thread” in her foreword to the book. In many cases, photographs are shown along with free-machined work. The latter half of the book features a number of etched, printed and silkscreened works as well as pastels. The book is about inspiration, not technique, and is a fitting tribute to this octogenarian who has made art for over sixty years. Treat yourself. $65 posted
